Sanjay Thevaparan grew up in a Tamil household in Connecticut, straddling two worlds from childhood  American suburbs on one hand, and on the other, the unbroken rhythm of South Indian ritual: the smell of camphor at a family muhurtham, the sound of nadaswaram at a cousin's wedding, the quiet gravity with which his grandparents spoke about what marriage actually means within their tradition.

That dual fluency became the foundation of his work. Long before he picked up a camera professionally, Sanjay understood  from the inside  why a muhurtham cannot be rescheduled, why a vidaai is never just a goodbye, and why a mandap is built with the same care as a temple. When he began photographing weddings, he brought that inherited literacy with him, then spent years deliberately expanding it: studying Punjabi Anand Karaj ceremonies, Gujarati garba traditions, Bengali saat paak customs, and the dozens of regional variations within each, until his fluency extended well beyond his own Tamil upbringing to the full breadth of the South Asian wedding tradition.

His work has been featured in Maharani Weddings, the premier publication for South Asian bridal editorial  recognition that reflects a broader philosophy: that these photographs are not content, they are inheritance.

Today, Mandap & Muhurtham operates from Connecticut and travels for celebrations across New York, New England, and worldwide  but the founding premise hasn't changed. Understand the ritual first. The photograph follows.
